Resistance spot welding is historically significant, as it is among the oldest electric welding procedures still widely used in the industry today. Resistance spot welding is performed through a combination of pressure, time and heat. In short, localized heating takes place during the weld, while tongs and electrode tips provide the necessary pressure and finally, the amount of time taken depends upon the thickness of the material being welded. Electrode tips allow a current to flow to separate pieces of metal and the resistance of the base metal to electrical current sparks heating in the join, thus causing the weld.
